The Vietnam trip was lovely with Jz, Tita Vic, Cuzin Francia, the couple (Lana & Jake) & their mommies – but due to time and budget  have not gone to the other out of the country destinations (no time for the yearly SG trip even); and moved some for trips next year so I could be with some of my loves and fave travel buddies during the trips ;) For trips to our very own Philippines, I was more than satisfied :D  As a first timer. I was very happy with the fun trips to Bohol with my lovey. Was not able to go to Coron, but enjoyed my first time in Puerto Princesa (first Spelunking and Zipline too! ) . Glad that I was able to spend Bora this time with some friends I haven’t travelled with before J.  So for 2012, I have updated my list and just carried some onto next year.. J
Hope to visit these:

3.       Cambodia. Angkor Wat was elusive haha!
4.       Dumaguete – Dad’s bugging me to accompany him to either Bacolod or Dumaguete since he has not been there yet. Hopefully for a long weekend.
5.       Marinduque – Bellarocca <3 I think Batanes is still more expensive so maybe here first J
6.       Sagada – Planned but not sure if I will go Spelunking again though  hahahaha! *excited* for this.
7.       Camiguin – pictures look so lovely .. probably the beaches are lovelier up close!

2012 will definitely be packed! Lets rockin’ travel! J

Weekend Treat: Mandarin Oriental

Jz and I decided to take advantage of my perks to avail of the weekend treats in Mandarin Hotel Makati. We originally planned to just book a De Luxe Room at 4500 php (taxes included) per night and breakfast for two included. But, the rooms are all booked on the dates we planned to have our stay. We decided to just upgrade the supposed reservation to a Business Room at 5000 php (taxes included). Business Room weekend treats include the same package as the De Luxe, only with complimentary local calls and wifi access The prices are applicable to those who have loyalty or company discounts. The regular price is not that bad though. It just 5500 php for both Deluxe and Business Rooms. The Superior Rooms are also available at 4500 php per night.Other more luxurious rooms are available at 6,000 php to 15,000 php per night.

At first, I was a bit of critical in noticing the parking. I just felt that it is odd for a hotel to have limited parking slots which are all located in an open area (comparing ti to most five start hotels). I also noticed that the hotel staff in the entrance are not that proactive in assisting guests who are about to enter the hotel. But, when we were able to reach the front desk staff, I forgave the not-so satisfying thing I noticed. The reception personnel was pleasant and courteous. She anticipated the questions I might throw and made sure all the information I need (wellness facilities, time of buffet, and other establishments in the hotel and its respective floors). The hotel's policy of not requiring a deposit which is usually double the total amount of the whole stay is very practical,. If the guest will pay in advance, they will not require the deposit as long as the payment will be done in cash.  The guests have the option to either just pull out the mini bar or reinstate it by informing the hotel staff and just pay in cash real time.

There is nothing special with the size and fixtures in the room. I was impressed with the laundry and iron storage though. The bathroom has enough space and a complete set of toiletries are prepared for guests.
When we tried for the wi-fi access, we were glad that the connection is fast. We tested it on the macbook, iPad, and iPod and even ran an online speed test to prove that the wifi access is not for show (which happens in other hotels).

What I enjoyed in our stay is the 24 hour schedule of the gym. I never thought that working out late at night would give me that adrenaline rush I need to boost my energy and make my weekend worthy. It also helped me to effortlessly snooze past midnight. Guests will just have to bring the key card for security access especially past 10 pm when no attendants are on schedule. The steam bath room is also available until 10pm.
Every time guests would have their workout, the attendant will immediately hand free bottles of water, serving of fruits, and towel to make it a holistic wellness activity. In addition, the  machines and facilities are up to date and user-friendly. These things made me forget that the it has been two hours of working out.

Another favorite is the brekky part. The Paseo Uno buffet breakfast offers vairety of American, Mediterranean, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and Continental food. The food servers are friendly and very attentive. The bread pudding can give my Heat fave a feat. I also loved the hot choco we requested twice which made me think that it was made with a bit of tablea and mixed with an imported drink to give that deliciously sophisticated drink. My other faves are the Mediterranean salad and pita bread with dips made of humus, feta cheese, and eggplant dressing.

Urban Thoughts:

- Guests who brought their cars has the better option to avail of the valet service if there is a need to drive somewhere else in between the stay. There might be some instances that parking will be full upon return. Not sure if we just experienced this because it rained and it is the Christmas rush - parties happening in the hotel, families and friends checking in for the weekend.

- It is better to take the non-smoking room since for the smoking floors,we were told  the smoking scent of the previous user may still be sniffed by the next guest :P In our case though, our rooms were clean and free of that cigar smell.

Quick Batangas Getaway: Canyon Cove

About 2 to 3 hours away from Manila, is a resort nestled in Nasugbu, Batangas that gives their guests the isolation they could ask for without the effort of a long road trip or the purchase of a plane fare. Canyon Cove offers overnight stay accommodations and day tours for those who just want to go to the beach for the weekend.

Aside from the white sand cove, the resort facilities also offers an al fresco grill, restaurant, game room, children's playground, and swimming pool. The guests would also enjoy the water sports such as banana boat ride, jet ski, kayak etc.

When we went here, we were with a well-travelled Singaporean friend and he was impressed with the resort even comparing it to the resorts he stayed while in Phuket :) The fantastic view of 'bowing trees'  and hilly terrains in the road past Tagaytay is a bonus for him.

Travel Thoughts:

- Check www.canyoncove.com.ph for latest promotions.
- 3d 2n stay ranges from 12k php to 20k php (per room) depending on room types
- catch daytour packages on sale through group coupon deals online (ensogo, everythinginbudget etc)

I Escape. The Boutique.

Choose the Scent of your Toiletries c/o Pamper Me Line

It was a random weekend when we decided to have an overnight bed and breakfast stay in Tagaytay. With all the sprawling B and Bs in Tagaytay right now and since I just dropped by to inquire for a stay,  I decided to share my experience in one of the older fave Bed and Breakfasts establishments - The Boutique.
Hot Choco & Chunky Monkey for Midnight Nibbles

It was one of the long weekends late year when we booked. The only room available was "I escape".
There were seven rooms at the time of our visit. But, now there are more rooms being constructed to accommodate more guests.

The room was quaint and cozy. It has an LCD, speakers, and DVD player and the usual shower facilities. The room was a bit small though. But, I was still happy since we were able to pick the scent of our own toiletries and were asked to choose among their selection found in their DVD library.

I love the king sized bed with huge and huggable pillows and soft warm comforters with white percale. There is a zebra-printed seat in the room and a table with all the fun trinkets such as a magic ball and decors with love quotes.

Our Chosen Breakfast

The reason why we would like to come back is the extra things that made us smile. One is the midnight snack we nibbled along with the delicious hot chocolate served. We also received a very relaxing facial massage. The breakfast served was also hefty and tasty! At the end of our stay, we were also given a small token as one of the Boutique's way of showing personal touch in their service.
Everything is personalized

Currently price rates for the rooms are from 5,600 php to 8,600 php during weekdays and 7,000 php to 11,000 php on weekends.

Travel Thoughts:

- There is a housed restaurant in the boutique - the famous Hawaiian BBQ.
- The "Pamper Me Line" products given such as the personally-selected toiletries are available for purchase. Ask the receptionist about it.
- Some of the other rooms are named: I Lust. I Dare. I Love. I Dream, and I Surrender. Some rooms have a jacuzzi overlooking Taal :)

Child-like at Enchanted Kingdom

The Magic is Here!

I was given two free tickets to this decade-old theme park. One weekend,  I decided to use this with my beau and  be kids for a day :P
Not so-soon, ill try this haha - Space Shuttle

I have learned that the price for the all-day pass now costs 500 Php each, which includes the theme park-owned rides and fun activities. This excludes the rides and activities offered by concessionaires.

It is my fourth time to visit the park and I felt that I took planning visits here for granted, maybe because my thinking is it is just less than an hour away from where I live. Thus, I can just visit anytime. This made me realize that I have not tried a lot if rides and activities yet. Admittedly, I am not a thrill seeker so I am really not that surprised :P The timing of our  visit was also good as the whole park gave that Halloween vibe in time for the upcoming event.
Happy Halloween at EK

But, in this most recent visit, I decided to try at least a ride that I have not tried before. I was finally convinced  to try Anchor's away. I am reserving Space Shuttle on a not-so-near future visit when I finally have the guts to try  :)) Some say that Anchor's away is more scary than Space Shuttle, still I do not think so.. But, it does not mean that my heart did not pump that much as a result of my freaky nervousness before the ride. At the end of the ride, I am very glad I tried. Yes, I got scared when we were being swayed back and forth by the ride (with the feeling that our napes are left weightless on air haha), but it was one fun-crazy experience.
The tummy-rolling/nape-dumbing ride - Anchors Away!

We also tried the Rialto, which is my favorite. The current short flick being showed is "Happy Feet".  The ride is for the whole family as it is not really for thrill seekers.
Happy Feet Now Showing at Rialto

We also tried the concessionaires' 4D and Horror Booth. The 4D Cinema showed Yogi Bear. I find it better than the Rialto experience in a way. Maybe because  it was longer and it has more effects. Price for the Cinema is 50 Php for all-day pass holders and 100 Php for the regular price. The Horror booth was not scary at all. Not sure if it is because the staff though I am that coward so they became nice halfway the route. For those who are curious to try, price is 50Php for all day pass holders and 100 Php for the regular price :))

Ekstreme Tower Ride

Other rides are the Jungle Log Jam and Rio Grande Rapids which require riders to bring extra set of clothes, as the rides will definitely make the guests wet. For those who want to challenge their fear of heights, EKstreme Tower Ride and Up Up and Away are best bets. For the kids, there is the Boulderville area of the park for them to enjoy.

Urban Thoughts:

The theme park is located at San Lorenzo South, Santa Rosa Laguna. It is open from Wednesday to Friday at 12NN to 7pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 11am to 9pm. Public Buses can bring guests to the park (Jac Liner and Jam Transit). Vans in the Edsa Crossing Terminal can also give those who want to visit a ride to the park for 60php.

Enchanted Kingdom  - more than a decade of magic :)

Palawan Paradise!

Underground River

It was my first time in Palawan. With the online 'coupon' fad going on, I was able to book a package through Metrodeal for a 3day 2night accommodation with city tour around Puerto Princesa. My parents loved this place ever since they were boyfreiend-girlfriend couple.. my friends would like to keep coming back.. and everyone who has been there just loved the place!
At The Legend Palawan

Upon stepping foot in this beautiful city, the clean streets and lush surroundings prove everything about its nature-friendly fame. Due to some internal arrangements with Metrodeal and their partner hotel, our booking was transferred to the Legend Palawan Resorts. Known for its Filipiniana style, the hotel offers a laid back vibe with a ceiling similar to what Venetian hotels have :P
Baker's Hill Mansion

We just checked in and fixed our luggages and off we go to our city tour. First stop was  the ctocodile farm. Aside from the planking-like crocodiles and photo-op with the baby specie, we also had the chance to taste sizzling.. yes.. crocodile! :D I already tried the Teriyaki Crocodile in a food festival in Macau. But, this time the viand is with local flavor. As expected, it tasted chicken ;)

After a a semi-zoological tour, we went to visit Mitra Ranch (of former Sen.  Mitra's clan), where the view is just breathtaking. Dos Palmas and an island owned by Legend Resorts can be seen from its garden. Then, we visited Baker's Hill - my favorite! The group is expecting the place to be just a pasalubong stopover. But, when we went inside, the place is just lovely. It could pass as a Loony Tune park  Pastries and breads are also must-trys :)
Planking Crocs :P

After the city tour, we just dropped by the hotel to freshen up and take our free post-tour 'merienda'. As if in a gastronomic feast, we decided to have our dinner to the famous grill restaurant - Kinabuchs.  Price for the servings is definitely more affordable than the grill places in Manila. One can even request for exotic dishes here. :P It is also a perfect inuman place for the barkada.
Crocodile Sisig

Since we somehow got to rest, we were recharged and extra excited for the Underground River trip. We have not been to the place, but for it to be in the finals for the new7wonders already give us that Pinoy pride. This is even more exemplified with how the locals market one of the best gifts of their island. It takes a two-hour van ride to Sabang port and a 45-minute boat ride to the Underground River National Park, which is found in a island where the river is located. The van ride is already a tour ride in itself as our tour guide told some stories about Palawan's history and economy. She also showed and described to us the different landscape of the province as we passed by the Elephant mountain (shaped like an elepehant) and the Ugong Cave (which we will visit to later on).

Upon reaching the Underground River National Park, we were amazed by the lovely surroundings which reminds us of how paradise is depicted in movies and books. We had to wait for our turn to ride the paddle boat to the river. Our tour is Kuya Rene. Lucky for us. He is a witty and knowledgeable local which made our tour more memorable and fun. We had to choose the  'light director' , the nickname for the one who will hold the light inside the cave :P We were both excited and nervous as it will be literally dark inside. A few seconds of entering the cave, we were already mesmerized with what we see , hear, and feel as the cave offers its mystique ambience which really brought us close to nature. There were stalagmites and stalactites which formed into very interesting forms and images. The river is the longest underground river in the world. No question that it will be worth the top spot in the 7 wonders of nature.
Palawan Gang

The tour is very tiring and the ride going back to Sabang is bumpy. Good thing, the tour includes a buffet by the beach package. After some rest and photo op by the beach, we took the option to try Caving and Zipline at Ugong Rock. What is even better than having the buffet itself is the fact that we need those calories for us to have the energy to do caving! At first, I was hesitant to do the zipline as it is my first time and its course is not the usual straight route. It has the initial downward impact. But, with the calorie-losing caving path we had, I think its time to have my first zipline experience. :)) With the hundred-step caving and 7 step-rope guided path, the zipline is just the exclamation point of the total Ugong Rock experience!
Caving at Ugong Rock

Post Caving Zipline!

As if we still have lots of energy, we had a night swim at the hotel before our booked dinner at Kalui.

Travel thoughts:

- Puerto Princesa's tagline is the city within a forest. Throwing of trash randomly is a no-no! Even vans and cars have their own trash bins as the city ordinance is strictly implemented.
- Cutting of trees (even at own backyards) is also prohibited, unless granted by the city hall.
- There are no cabs in the city. Apart from the hotel shuttle, we also tried the city tricycles. From our hotel to Kalui and Kinabuchs, fare is 40 pesos.
- When dining at Kalui, it is best to ask the hotel receptionist to book a slot for you. It can only accommodate 150 pax while tourists usually try the cuisine in this quaint diner.Be reminded that dining at Kalui means having to dine with your bare feet :)
- Meanwhile, Kinabuchs is more spacious. Our favorite was their laing and Crispy Pata.
- Some tour guides are formely involved in kaingin or other illegal ways that destroy the nature. With the help of the city government, they have already transformed into tour guides or caretakers of important nature spots and tourist destinations. One example, is the man who do the orientation in Ugong Rock - very happy and refreshing to know. Good job to the city government!

Kalibo in a Day

Since I will submit an article for an in-flight magazine on Kalibo, I decided to blog it as well. Kalibo is famous for Ati-atihan festival. Foreign and local tourists flock to Aklan to feast with the locals. It is also famous for being a 'connecting' destination to the world famous island of Boracay. One trip to the island, made us decide to explore Kalibo in a day for a change.

We decided to stay at the home of the famous Precious Moments dolls and keepsakes - Sampaguita Gardens. It is located in New Washington, Aklan and is only 20 minutes away from the airport. Rates start from !,900 php.

Though Christmas is near when we went for a visit, we were told that even it is not the season, the place still gives the Christmas-y feel.

Other must-trys of Kalibo is having mango shake in Miggy's place. If you are heading to Manila for a Bora trip or waiting for a 'sundo' after a flight to Kalibo, this restaurant is a good food stop. Their spaghetti and local viands are also fave hits.

Travel Thoughts:

- People who forgot to buy some of their 'pasalubongs' in Boracay and will flyt to Manila via Kalibo, there are  pasalubong shops in the airport where one can buy Aklan's famous alimango (crabs) and pastries

- Sampaguita Gardens support some Aklan-based foundations, buying their souvenirs would help these charities.

Baguio: Not Just Your Summer Capital

Zigzag road to Baguio

One of the more frequent and most vivid memories of my childhood are those I had in Baguio. Differing from the most famous description of Baguio as Summer Capital, my memories are more of Christmas or cooler seasons around January or February. When I was a teen turning into yuppie and having my means to travel with friends, I had more experiences of the famous Panagbenga and summer seasons in Baguio.

Now, the things and places which made Baguio famous, have changed. The city did not escape from the sprouting malls. Thus ,having its own SM Mall. This mall is now considered one of the most famous landmarks in the city, when before the city only have the ukay ukay stalls and city market as options for pasalubong shopping. With its strategic view decks that offers the breathtaking view of the city, photo ops are frequent in the mall.

Compared to my childhood memories of horse back riding pictures and strolling in Session road, sidetrips to Tam-awan and strawberry farms or shopping at the outlet stores in Club John Hay are more likely the things people do now.
YMCA Hostel

My visits here are either backpacking (usually YMCA for accommodation) or a bit more luxurious (Baguio country club is one of the best). For commuters, Victory liner offers hourly trips and even a de luxe ride with no stop overs and spaceous reclining seats.

Baguio Country Club Connecting Rooms

Travel Thoughts:

Victory Liner travels daily from Pasay/Cubao to Baguio

- Victory Liner offers hourly trips (1am to 12 mn) to Baguio from Pasay Or Cubao (445 Php). For Deluxe trips (no stop over ; with free snacks), price range from 600 php (w/o rest room) up to 700 php (w/ rest room).
- Backpacking stay at YMCA is at 1500 php. They have clean and newly renovated rooms. The hostel is accessible (near SM Baguio and Session Rd)
- Try Mile Hi Diner for affordable meals with huge servings. Their milkshakes are must-trys!

- Baguio Country club is best for more luxurious vacation with family and friends. Their buffet meals are the best! Make sure to drop by the Raisin Bread - where literal rasin breads are unforegettable

Salad Buffet at BCC - talk about FRESH

Baguio Country Club's Raisin Bread

- Other dining options are Vizco's along session road. Their chicken cordon bleu and deserts are just flavorful. For budget dning, rice toppings at Andok's (also along Session road). For sizzling type of meals, I make sure to stop by Tender Joe's at John Hay

I attended the Feature Writing 101 (2nd batch) by Writers Block Philippines held at Powerbooks,Greenbelt 3. Some of their workshops include "Jumpstart Your Writing Career", "Walk Write This Way" - in partnership with Carlos-Celdran, and the just concluded Feature Writing 101.

I personally chose Feature writing to share my experiences as a foodie and traveler through writing. Based on what I have learned yesterday, I was not disappointed and very much glad that I joined.

Great job to the facilitators and attendees!

Pangasinan Perfecture

Our Lady of Manaoag

I have been in the province of Pangasinan for the nth time because it is the hometown of my Dad. Pangasinan is famous for Hundred Islands and Milkfish (Bangus). But, we go there almost every year to visit Our Lady of Manaoag. During these visits, we appreciate the landscape and the food even more :)
Manaoag Church Compound

On our last visit, Manaoag is still part of our list. And since my family's scheduled to go to Vancouver weeks after the visit, we made it a point to meet up with relatives and family friends at our favorite restaurants in Dagupan.
Pedrito's Dagupan City

First stop is Pedrito's. It is located in Tapuac District, Dagupan City. We love having breakfasts here so we cannot miss it this time. Each of us tried different kinds of omelets. I tried the unique version of their crab omelet. I find it different but delicious especially for the health conscious. Omelet servings range from 150+ php to 200+ php. Pedrito's offer Dagupan delcacies as well. Pasalubong packs' (ex: polvoron, crinkles etc) price range from 50php to 100+php. A bottle of the famous Pangasinan Alige is also available for 250 php minimum.
Crab Omelet at Pedrito's

Another must-try is Matutina's. I remember whenever we pass by Tondaligan beach (in Bonuan, Dagupan, Pangsinan), Matutina's is the venue of our lunch or dinner semi-reunions. I have also heard that former Pres. GMA is fond of having her food stopover here whenever in the province. The restaurant offer fresh seafood viands and ihaw-ihaw food as well. The place has already improved from having sandy flooring before to a cemented and more sophisticated interiors now. They even expanded and I just saw a branch along Central-North Luzon National Road (boundary of Pangasinan and Tarlac). Viands price range from 170 php to 400+ php. What else could be the must-try but the Dagupan Bangus!
Matutina's Annex II, Bonuan

Travel Thoughts

- Pangasinan is also famous for their sweet Mangoes (especially in the town of Malasiqui) and tasty Puto Calasiao.
- Another town in Pangasinan is Bolinao which is famous for its lovely beaches.
- Pangasinan is more accessible now that one can pass via SCTEX - Tarlac, where you can catch a breathtaking sunrise and sunset (depending on the time of your travel)
- Manaoag church area has been renovated recently. It is more spaceous for devotees and visitors.

SCTEX view on the way to Pangasinan
